German Language Learning Levels

German Language has six learning levels : A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

The language certification at each level of learning is based on the criteria laid down as per the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR).

The common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR) is concerned with the assessment of language learning of a foreign language. The aim of CEFR is to make the various European language certificates comparable with one another and to create a benchmark for the acquisition of language skills.

The categorization is as per CEFR is:

  • elementary language use
  • Independent language use
  • Competent language use

These are further divided into 06 sub-levels of language proficiency which is the common pattern followed in German language learning.

 

A1 – Beginner:

The learner can understand and  use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs. In this phase the learner can introduce himself and others and ask other people questions about themselves.

A2 – Basic Knowledge:

In this language learning phase, the learner can understand sentences and commonly used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. The learner can interact in routine situations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

B1 – Advanced Use of Language:

Here the learner can understand the main points of clear, standard language on familiar matters relating to work, school, leisure, time, etc. The learner would become adept in communicating with real-life situations, can produce simple connected text on a familiar topic or can express about his dreams, aspirations, views, hopes, goals, etc.

B2 – Independent Language Use:

The learner will be in a position to understand key ideas of complicated texts on concrete and abstract topics; the person can understand technical discussions pertain to his profession, etc. The learner can communicate so spontaneously and fluently that a normal conversation with native speakers is easily possible without great effort on either side.

On completion of this phase, the learner can produce clear detailed texts on varied subjects and able to express his view point on any topic of discussion.

C1 – Expert Language Skills:

In this phase of advanced language practice, the learner can understand a wide range of comprehensive and longer texts, including their implicit meaning. On completion of C1 level, the learner can use the language effectively  and flexibly in social and professional life or in training and studies.

            C2 – Nearly Native Language Skills:

On completion of C2, a learner can understand with ease and sensibly whatever is read or heard. Here the prospective learner can summarize information from a variety of written and oral sources, and can reproduce meanings and explanations in a coherent manner.

 

The German Language Certification:

The German Certification exams are based on the specifications put forth by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The certificate exams test the ability of a participant to use the language independently in everyday conversations and situations at work. The exam is divided in to 04 modules which oversee five different components.

Reading Comprehension: Here participants’ skills on global, selective and detailed comprehension of different texts from Austria, Germany and Switzerland is checked on the basis of 03 tasks.

Language Modules: This module is intended to gauge a participant’s understanding of grammar and his vocabulary  are being assessed.

Listening Comprehension: Candidate’s skill in understanding global and detailed comprehension of audio content spoken in standard accent from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are checked.

Writing: Here letter drafting skills of a candidate is assessed using standard parameters and checked against specified criteria.

Speaking: In this module a conversation is held in an individual or in pairs on various topics.
