The formal name of Netherlands is Kingdom of Netherlands. The country is often called as ‘Holland’ which refers to the North and Southern part of Holland. Both the Netherlands and Holland refer to the small country that is wedged between Germany, Belgium and North Sea. There are 03 more Caribbean islands – Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten which are also part of Kingdom of Netherlands.

The Dutch higher education system is well organized and very much diverse, offering many English taught programs to international student community.

Higher education (tertiary level education) is made up of hoger beroepsonderwijs – HBO (higher vocational education), and wetenschappelijk onderwijs – WO (university education – science/academic). These two forms of education are provided by hogescholen (polytechnics / university of applied sciences) and universities respectively.

Post Study work permits for international students in Netherlands:

In Netherlands, the tertiary higher education is done by 13 universities including the 03 technical universities.

Upon completion of the studies, the students can apply for a residence permit for the ‘orientation year’ as a highly educated migrant seeking employment or as a startup. With the orientation year residence permits, graduates and researchers are free to work in the Netherlands during the orientation year.

During the period of their studies, international students are allowed to do part-time work. International students are allowed to do 16 hours part–time work in the Netherlands during their study tenure. However international students are permitted to do full-time work during the summer months – June, July, and August.

International students are allowed to apply for permanent residency (PR),  provided they prove 05 years of consecutive lawful stay in the Netherlands and sufficient language proficiency in Dutch is submitted.
